Dangerous gas leaks may be prevented

In the wake of three recent gas leaks in the area, the Truckee Fire Protection District is stressing the importance of safety measures:

  • If you smell gas indoors or outdoors, evacuate the area immediately without starting your vehicle, switching lights on or off or providing any other ignition source.
  • Once you are at a safe distance, call your local Fire Department or gas provider.  They can determine whether the odor is a dangerous leak or simply a nuisance.
  • Keeping your underground or above ground tank clear of snow keeps the pressure off the tank and allows access to the shut-off valve.
  • Tanks should be marked with a stake above the snow level.
